Our Chinese New Year Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Crown Princess Fine Dining in Toronto.  We are pleased to invite Mr. Dave Pelletier, Board Member, Equitable Life and RGA Life Reinsurance to speak about:

A Seasoned Actuary’s Views on an Interesting Career

Dave Pelletier has been a retired actuary for almost 10 years and has continued to be very active in the profession. He had previously worked for a major consulting firm, managing offices in Canada, South America and Europe, including nine years living and working in Brazil and Italy.  Besides being board members of both Equitable Life and RGA Life Reinsurance, Dave was recently appointed to the Actuarial Profession Oversight Board. Dave’s views on an interesting and successful career will include the following topics:

· Living and working abroad as an actuary.

· Advantages of being bilingual (or more) and bicultural (or more).

· Experience in consulting and reinsurance in Asia.

· Benefits of volunteering.

· Where the profession is going, to enhance your career.

Our CNY meeting was held on November 6, 2019, at Crown Princess Fine Dining in Toronto.  We were pleased to have Mr. Mike Lombardi, President at MLBC Consulting. The topic was "A Past President's View of the SOA"

Mike gave an excellent presentation enjoyed by over 80 attendees.

"A Past President's View of the SOA"

Mike Lombardi is President of MLBC Consulting and a Board member of Foresters Financial. As a past president of the Society of Actuaries, Mike found the SOA to be a very interesting organization and he will share with us many aspects of the SOA.

It will be a great opportunity for us to learn about the SOA budgets and strategic plans, functions of certain committees such as the Asia and Greater China committees, the SOA’s international role, insights and stories around key events. Mike will also cover many other interesting topics in which many of us can learn a great deal.

Our summer BBQ has returned.  This year, our gathering will take place on Saturday, July 13th, 2019 starting at 4pm.  Guests will enjoy fantastic food such as Hot dogs, Korean ribs, Salad, Fruits, Corn, Ice-cream, Pastries, Chow Mein, Fried Rice, Suckling Pig, BBQ pork, etc.  Our summer gathering is a great place to network in a casual atmosphere.  Please see registration form for more details.

Admission is free for 2019 club members and $10 for non-members who register before the early bird deadline (July 10th at 12 noon).  Note, non-members can sign up for membership at the BBQ and qualify for the membership price. Space is limited, so please register early.

"Risk Based Capital Development in India"

Mr. Steven Chen is a Principal in the Toronto office of Oliver Wyman Actuarial Consulting. Steven has over 10 years of life insurance and annuity experience. He is also a council member (2019-2022) of the SOA international section.

The Indian insurance sector has continued to grow in scale and diversity. The insurance regulator, IRDAI, plans to comprehensively update the solvency regime to a more risk-based approach in the next few years. This presentation will provide an overview of the risk-based capital development in India and discuss the key implementation challenges and potential impacts to the insurance industry.

As a returning speaker, Steven will also give a brief update to the presentation A Money and Information Business: Insurance E-business Development and Trend in China he presented at our club 5 years ago.
